Smart Paintbrush
Youth4Youth was honoured to hold our first session for students from Y7 to Y11 at ESF South Island School. This week, the students learnt how technology, specifically artificial intelligence, machine learning and neural networks, can be applied to art by exploring Image-to-Image Demo and GauGAN.
Using Image-to-Image Demo, students were able to create their own drawings and have the software change them into images. Students enjoyed learning about how the pix2pix model works through being trained on pairs of images which it uses to generate an output image from any input image provided to it. However, the highlight of this session was definitely GauGAN, a tool that converts doodles into stunning, photorealistic art. This tool is often called a "robot artist" and students loved using this new software which is currently being used in industry, while also learning about how it works. We taught the students about GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) which are networks that are made of two parts: the generator and the discriminator. These compete against each other checking and improving the network as a whole. The generator creates a stream of data, determined by its architecture and the discriminator acts as a database, comparing to determine whether the data is accurate or not. It was great to see the students contributing actively during the session and sharing their work with us!
